Harford Tennis Complex
The brand-new tennis courts on the campus of Harford Community College are getting plenty of use since they opened at the end of the Spring 2013 semester. With the new construction of the APG Federal Credit Union Arena on campus, the tennis courts had to be relocated to the opposite side of the new arena. That wasn't the only "new" feature of the courts, though. Plans called for blue tennis courts, to remain in line with the Fighting Owls colors.
The courts remain open to the community, as well as the home of Harford men's and women's tennis. The new facility has lights that automatically turn off no later than 1 a.m. using new technology with a timer and photo eye. All rain runoff from the tennis courts goes into a storm water management facility to help control run off into nearby streams.
Each main court is individually lit and the fencing is plastic coated to prevent injury. There is nearby accessible parking and the courts are fully ADA complaint. Another unique design has a walkway between the courts for optimal viewing and coaching. Future plans call for seating in the hill between the courts and the parking lot.
The Harford Sports Complex is equipped with an advanced warning system for lightning installed for the safety of its patrons. The Thorguardian system continuously monitors the atmosphere’s electrostatic energy as far away as 15 miles and evaluates the potential for lightning within an area approximately 2 miles in radius.
Â
When the system determines a hazardous condition, the air-horns and strobe lights will activate. You will be warned by a horn that sounds for 15 seconds followed by a strobe light. The strobe light will remain flashing until a safe condition returns.
Â
Upon activation of the system YOU MUST EVACUATE THE SPORTS COMPLEX, until the all clear is given by 3 five second horn blasts.
Â
IF YOU DO REMAIN OUTDOORS AFTER THE WARNING IS ISSUED, YOU DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK.
