TOWSON, Md.—The Harford men's lacrosse team managed just one goal as No. 5 Anne Arundel routed the Fighting Owls (4-8, 0-2 MDJUCO), 16-1, on Saturday afternoon at Johnny Unitas Stadium at Towson University. The Pioneers (7-3, 2-1 MDJUCO) pestered Harford with 40 total shots , while the Owls attempted just 17 in the one-sided decision.
Freshman Craig Hanzelka (Edgewood, Md./Edgewood) scored the lone goal for Harford, an unassisted affair that ricocheted off the far post and dribbled past Pioneer keeper Brandon Patten with 8:23 remaining in the third quarter.
Harford was held scoreless by Anne Arundel in the first half, which built a 9-0 lead after two quarters of play and added one more in the third before Hanzelka finally put the Owls on the board in the third.
Zach Cummings led the Pioneer attack with four goals on the day and also added an assist, while Christian Cronin was the Anne Arundel points leader with two goals and four helpers for a total of six points.
The Pioneers controlled the game throughout, capitalizing on 11 failed Harford clears, while falling short in just five of their own and also held a 63-47 advantage in ground balls, as well as converting on 2-of-3 extra man opportunities while the Owls were 0-6 on the day.
Harford almost drew even with the Pioneers in face-offs, but the visitors still held a 12-8 advantage in face-off wins. Sophomore Russell Harrell (Joppatowne, Md./Joppatowne) was the Harford leader at the X, winning 5-of-9 attempts, while Wilton Downs was successful in 7-of-10 tries.
Freshmen keepers Bryan Burrill (Forest Hill, Md./C. Milton Wright) and Lee Single (Edgewood, Md./Edgewood) split time in goal for Harford, with Burrill tallying six saves in the first 30:00 and Single totaling seven saves in the second half.
Patten corralled nine shots for the Pioneers, while playing the full 60:00 between the pipes.
The Fighting Owls return to competition on Tuesday when they host Montgomery College-Rockville in an MDJUCO matchup at 5:00 p.m. at Harford Stadium.
