GIBSONIA, Pa.—The Harford golf team finished second in the NJCAA Region XX Championship and three players qualified for the NJCAA national championship in Scottsboro, Ala. from May 19-22 this past weekend at Pittsburgh National Golf Club.

The Fighting Owls amassed a total of 681 points for the two-day event, behind champion Potomac State, which totaled 626 points.  The College of Southern Maryland rounded out the team scoring with 682 points for a third-place showing, while CCAC-Allegheny and Hagerstown competed on only one day each.

Sophomores Chris Appel (Abingdon, Md./Bel Air) and Tony Tiburzi (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) and freshman Anthony Vincenti (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) qualified for the national tournament by virtue of their individual finishes in relation to the Region XX championship field.  The five-man team from Potomac State automatically qualifies for national play and the five next best finishers from the regional tournament get bids as well.  Harford claimed three of those spots, while Southern Maryland nabbed the other two.

Appel led the Owls with a fourth-place finish, shooting an 82 on day one and 80 on day two for a two-round total of 162.  Vincenti was just behind Appel with a 165 two-round total.  Vincenti was tied for first, with eventual individual champion Brendan Dillon, from Potomac State, after shooting a 78 on day one, but struggled on day two and wound up with an 87 for the second round.

Tiburzi rounded out the three NJCAA national qualifiers with a ninth-place finish as he shot a 168 for the two days, 87 during the first round and 81 for the second.

Freshmen Jacob Bays (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) completed the scoring four for Harford, tying for 19th with a 186 (95, 91) overall score, while sophomore Sean Kluge (North East, Md./North East) competed in just the second round and posted a 111 for the day.

Appel, Vincenti and Tiburzi will continue competition for the Fighting Owls from May 19-22 when they travel to Scottsboro, Ala. for the NJCAA Division II National Championship at Goose Pond Colony Golf Course.
