Box Score
TOWSON, Md.—The Harford men's lacrosse team trailed by two goals with 2:35 left in the third quarter, but Anne Arundel scored twice within the last 15 seconds of the third to take an insurmountable, four-goal lead on the way to the 11-6 win on Saturday at Unitas Stadium.
The Fighting Owls (6-9, 1-4 MDJUCO) saw their only lead disintegrate quickly in the first as the Pioneers (10-5, 4-1 MDJUCO) scored five straight goals after freshman Eric Kluge () took a pass from freshman Ben Wilson (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) just 1:06 into the game.
Wilson added his own tally with just over six minutes left in the first and Harford cut the lead to two, 5-3, as freshman Dane Grudzien (Joppatowne, Md./Joppatowne) notched the only goal of the second quarter, a man-down affair with 1:33 to go.
Another seven-and-a-half minutes of scoreless play would ensue in the third quarter, before Anne Arundel scored with 7:24 remaining. The Pioneers added another goal two minutes later to bring the lead to 4, 7-3, but Harford added two in a row to cut the advantage to two, 7-5 with 2:35 left in the third.
The rally was for naught, however, as Anne Arundel tallied two goals with the last 15 seconds of the quarter and then added the first goal of the fourth to complete a 3-0 run and take a 10-5 lead. Each team would add one more goal on the way to the 11-6 Pioneer victory.
Grudzien led the Fighting Owls with three goals on the day, while Wilson tallied three points (1g, 2a). Zach Cummings paced Anne Arundel with five points (4g, 1a) and Corbin Voelker added four (1g, 3a).
In the cage, Harford freshman Tim Kemena (West Chester, Pa./West Chester Henderson) stopped a season-high 16 shots in 60:00, while Scott Marsh tallied eight saves in 60:00 for the Pioneers.
Anne Arundel handily bested Harford in shots, 37-29, and face-offs, 15-6, but the Owls were much scrappier on the ground, corralling just five ground balls less (47) than Anne Arundel (52).
The Fighting Owls have wrapped up the regular season and will continue play in the Region XX Opening Round on Wednesday when the No. 5 Owls travel to No. 4 Howard for a 4:00 p.m. game.
