Sophomore Steve Heagy won at No. 2 doubles and No. 3 singles against Rockville.
BEL AIR, Md.—The Harford men’s tennis team won its fourth straight as it downed Montgomery College-Rockville, 8-1, on Tuesday, the second time in six days that the teams met.
The Fighting Owls (4-2) dropped just one match to the Knights (0-4), at No.1 singles, and had four double-winners on the day in sophomores Josh Meier (Belcamp, Md./Home School) and Steve Heagy (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and freshmen Marc Donars (Joppa, Md./Harford Tech) and Walker Bazemore (Churchville, Md./C. Milton Wright).
Meier and freshman Cory Litka (York, Pa./Aberdeen/East Stroudsburg) got things started at No.1 doubles by handing Andrew Ortis and Brad Toulbee an 8-6 decision, while Heagy and Donars downed Kamron Najibi and Jason Phannschmidt, 8-4 in the No. 2 spot and Bazemore and freshman Kevin O’Brien (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) earned a default win at No. 3 doubles.
Meier continued his undefeated dual match season, defeating Toulbee in the No. 2 spot, 6-3, 6-2, while Heagy dispatched Najibi, 6-2, 6-4. Phannschmidt, Donars’ opponent at No. 4 singles, couldn’t take the unusually hot weather and withdrew during the second set, giving Donars the 6-1, 4-3 win, while Bazemore rounded out the double-winners with a second default win at No. 6 singles.
Sophomore Ben Wade (Joppatowne, Md./Joppatowne) and Litka completed the results with Wade earning a 6-4, 6-0 win over Thomas Rigolage in the No. 5 slot and Litka falling to Rotis, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.
The Fighting Owls take to the road this weekend, facing Rhode Island on Friday, SUNY-Delhi (at Rhode Island) on Saturday and Albertus Magnus on Sunday.
